why have the leaves on our silver birch trees trees that were planted last autumn gone brown?

Most likely they have dried out. see if new buds have formed in the leaf axles, sometimes you may have to lose some of the top growth to reestablish them. There is still time for them to produce a few new leaves, if they dont and no new buds are showing, you may have lost them. but wait till next Soring to make sure.
