Welcome to GoY and welcome to Aberdeenshire!
What kind of plants are you interested in - shrubs? Annuals? Perennials?
I have recently moved to a new build house so we haven't established the garden yet. But in my last place I successfully grew lots of flowering shrubs (less maintenance!). I had (excuse my spelling) ....
rhodedendrons
potentillas
skimmias
crocosmias
forsythias
buddlias
peiris
cotoneasters
helebores
euyonomous
roses
hardy fushias
syringas
hebes
st johns wort

All of these did really well in a south facing garden. Hope that gives you some suggestions!
Enjoy your new garden....

Hi Liz and welcome to GoY. It seems like a lot of people from Aberdeenshire are joining. I have moved home as well and found quite a few shrubs/ plants in them.

I love the following

Escallonia Apple Blossom
Hydrangea
Honeysuckle
Foxglove

Ah I forgot my honeysuckle, it was stunning!
I have some escallonias in my new front garden - think they are 'Rubra's.

Here are some favorites from northern Arizona, where the winters are freezing, and the wind never stops blowing:

Russian Sage (Perovskia), Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia), Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergiana), Junipers, Mugo Pine, Holly Grape (Mahonia aquifolium), Flowering Crabapples (Malus species), Shrubby Cinquefoil (Potentilla fruticosa), Dwarf Bearded Iris, Rudbeckia, Gaillardia. Cushion Mums, Shasta Daisy, Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana).

Hope these help!
