There's been some discussion about this recently - I was taught in training that these plants couldn't be divided, and this information is repeated in both the RHS book and the Readers Digest Encylopaedia I have here, so my advice is, you can't. However, I understand some other people on here say they have divided them successfully, so take your pick. As to when, most plant division takes place in autumn or spring.
