You only prune plum trees in the summer, as disease tends to enter the wounds at other times of the year eg silver leaf fungus. The classic way is to prune any crossing branches and to keep branchs at a 45 degree angle, clear a few centre branches away to keep the middle of the tree more open. take the branches you are removing close to the stem as possible.
