i have grown tomatos for the first time this year, but when they turn red they also have a hard brown spot on the bottom of the fruit, do you know what it could be.

Yes, it sounds like "bottom end rot" an unusual name but it is caused by irregular watering. Not a lot you can do for this year I'm afraid!
