I have a cornus kuosa chinesis and a cornus kousa satomi, bought at Wisley 4 years ago which have yet to bloom although the leaves are in good condition. They are both about 4 foot high, face west and get sun for a good part of the day. They are in chalky clay soil improved with garden compost mulch. Is there anything I can do to get them to bloom?

Hi I have a cornus kousa and it took mine 5 yrs to get a few flowers.Dont know if it will ever get to the beauties you see in some gardens.Do they need pruning....?

Only prune out weak shoots or one that are causing a problem. They need older wood to produce short flowering stems from.

Perhaps they are a little too young I fear. They can take several years to reach flowering, perhaps another three or four depending upon how old they were when you bought them. You can help by mulching regularly with plenty of organic matter and feed with a high potash fertiliser once a year such as any good slow release granular rose food.
Stick with them both, they are certainly worth it!
