Hyssop
I bought a hyssop plant from the local garden centre last week, I took it home, repotted it and a week later is either dead or dying. I don't think I did anything bad to it, does anybody know what could have happened ? Thank you

Have you kept it well watered? Was it under cover when you bought it at the garden centre? If so, and its been a bit cold at night, it could be the shock from being exposed outdoors. This assumes you didn't damage the roots when you repotted it... you didn't use ericaceous compost, did you?

I have a whole border in my garden of Hyssop ( check my photo section to see it in my garden). This is a tough plant. you may have pressed to hard repotting it and have broken a major part of the root system as Bamboo suggests. Keep it in FULL SUN, keep it watered but make sure it drains well and see if it comes back. if it does and if you can, plant it in a full sun part of your garden and you will see that this plant will establish itself very well. It's one of my very favorites.

Thanks, you two, no I was gentle with it, kept it indoors on a windowsill for a bit, watered it well, infact other plants I bought that day are fine. The soil was Innes soil based mixed with miracle-gro. I thought maybe I'd overwatered it, but they've all had the same amount of water and this is the only one to droop. It's all soft and floppy! I suppose I must have damaged it somehow. I'll take it out and have a look...thank you for your advice. Just going to look at yours Loosestrife..

Ah, you said you kept it on the kitchen windowsill for a bit - if you then transferred it straight outside and left it there overnight, and since, it'll be transition shock from the cold. When a plant's been inside for a while, it needs to be hardened off gradually before being left outside all the time.

You can either just leave it and see what happens, or bring it back inside, cut off anything that doesn't recover over the next few days, and wait for it to produce new growth, then replace outside, this time going through the hardening off process.

Thanks Bamboo, but it was droopy before I put it out, I only put it out cos it's been so sunny and mild for the last few days, I thought it might perk it up! (No I'm not a very good gardener! I do try but green fingered I ain't)

I'm not sure you needed to add miracle gro when repotting. Would the compost not have enough feed in it to last at least a month? I understand you are an inexperienced gardener and I am asking the question of the others who have answered as I would like to know. I understand all the other answers given and how they could have affected your plant.

I think the compost was pre mixed with Miracle Gro, Scotsgran - but its a good question anyway, and one I neglected to ask - what number John Innes was the compost you used, No. 1, 2 or 3?

Hi Scotsgran, it was miraclegro compost I should have said, but I am always a bit generous with the plant foods I must admit. Maybe now I have moved to where I want to be, I will try and be a bit more serious about gardening and not just be an occasional gardener. I've no excuse really what with the internet and everything. Thank you.

Thank you both. I did not understand that the JI comes with miracle gro in it. Mazziestar is it a compost for pottting on. I tend not to buy ready made compost except the multipurpose one. It does not need anything added for a number of weeks. I started gardening 40 years ago and I have learned a huge amount in the time I have been a member of goy. It has been a whole new learning experience for me. I expect to know I have died when I find I am not learning any more. lol.

There are those who don't learn anymore and still live...by choice. There are alot of these mindless people out there these days....I think they are called zombies.
