Some people say cut them back and others say don't. I am just going to trim mine as I cut them back last year and regretted it.

Do you mean penstemon? If so you could try cutting it back half way to engourage some ew growth lower down.. If they are left without any trimming they tend to get very twiggy after a couple of yeqars.

I cut my penstemons down to the new shoots they start to make near the base, but not until spring is well under way (usually early April here in Berkshire)

I prefer 'Pestimons'!
