Orange flowers with exploding seed pods

Asked on 1 Aug, 2008

Anyone know what this is?
The Pods explode (sound like cap gun) in august, the plants re-appear every year whether I pull them out or not. the seeds are brown about 2mm round and have a furry texture, I have given the seeds to other people to plant but they have never re grown for them

Never seen Alstrmeria seed pods explode before. they look like small annual poppy seed heads. Inside are usually lots of small orange balls about 2 mm across.

I don't think Alstromeria seeds pop. A tip for Alstromerias, when the flowers drop off YANK the stem out of the griund do not CUT it, you will find it will send up fresh growth and possibly bloom again before the first frost.

Re-read the question. I can tell you why the seeds have not grown for people. They have a very odd germination sequence. The need a period of warmth, then a period of cold. The fresh seed is sown at a minimum of 20c for 4 weeks then you need to scratch the seed coat just above the dark spot then resow at 10c. Do not prick out, but grow on in deeper and bigger pots until ready for the garden.
The book says the pods pop, but I have never seen it myself.
