I have a small pear tree in my garden wich i would like to to trim down before it gets to big but ihave never done it before and i dont want to damage it can you tell me how to do it

You can do summer pruning with apples and pears.

Sorry about the long url, but that site will tell you about summer pruning and why it can be done and for what reasons. The real pruning should be done in winter, you can find that on internet too. Just google for how to prune pear trees. But fruit trees which go dormant in winter, should be pruned in December, January, no earlier as pruning stimulates the growth and otherwise new shoots will emerge and can freeze off.
