I planted a cherry tree last year. Although it has lots of new shoots/growth coming directly out of the ground, the original tree that I planted has no growth on it at all. Will I be able to remedy this by pruning the original?

you could talk to your supplier about replacing it for you--- some are very good about it as sometimes its Their supplier

Many thanks for your replies. I've bought quite a few plants and trees off ebay and have been totally disappointed with everything I've bought.
I wont prune it, see what it looks like next year and make a decision after that. Its growing like pampas grass at the moment.

the rootstock is often more vigorous than the grafted shoot so thats why its up and away

this sounds like the upper part 'graft' has died and the growth you have is from the root stock. this wont be the same cherry and might not be cherry at all as they often use apple as the root stock. If you do prune it it will make a nice tree in time.
