Suitable Climbing Rose

Asked on 7 Nov, 2007

Can anyone suggest a reliable variety of climbing (not rambling) rose. We're not particularly fussy about the colour - though a peachy or apricot colour would be nice. The most important factor is that it should be a disease resistant variety as we seem to be prone to powdery mildew on our other roses. We spray but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Whilst a good continuous flowerer would be preferable, it shouldn't grow too rampantly as it will be on the rear wall of the cottage where a narrow path runs alongside.

I've grown two 'Leverkusen' roses over an arch for many years without any sign of disease - they're a pale yellow colour. Grows to around ten feet, good first flush in June/July and some flowers later off and on

Thanks AndrewR - 'Leverkusen' sounds a good prospect. Is this widely available or more of a specialist's variety?

Just checked RHS plantfinder - A number of Nurseries listed including David Austin, so shouldn't be a problem to track it down. Hope that helps.

Thanks spritz - will try the website tomorrow. I love the 'old' roses like David Austin's, we inherited one on the side of the cottage but don't know the name of it. I'll have to take a photo when it's next in flower and see if anyone can identify it. Not knowing much about roses, though, I don't know how disease resistant the 'old' roses are.

Many of the old roses aren't particularly good on disease resistance as, until recently, this was not considered a factor by the breeders. I guess if you had a staff of 50 gardeners, one of them could spray!
Leverkusen I know has good disease resistance and I suspect that the David Austin ones will have that bred into them as well as it is something that is more relevant these days

Thanks AndrewR, I think we'll probably go with Leverkusen as you say it has good disease resistance - it's best to go on recommendation.
