Do cordyline roots grow straight down or spread out as someone told they the roots grow down as I want to plant in garden but am unsure because of the roots at the moment the cordlines are in pots

Roots go down and spread out - they need to put a couple downwards or they'd fall over. But they're not deep rooting, not like a tree.
