Not sure what you have in mind, how about new fence panels at the back and lots of pots and troughs.

thanks they not as bad as they look need staining, pots yes, was thinking more about the flags ? thanks

There is nothing wrong with the flags as such - slightly odd colours but you can't paint them. Just cover with lots of pots as Dr B has suggested, making sure you raise the pots up off the lags so water can drain and bugs can't get in so easily.

The flags will weather down in no time, they are new so stand out more.Once you get plants on and around them your eye won't be drawn to them as much.

I think if it were me I would stain the fence green to tone down all the pink, then put hanging baskets on all the posts, with lots lots of pots in three groups and table and chairs and the paving will disappear? In the front I would plant something to soften the edges of the paving such as lavender and other small shrubs and or with perennials. Lots of ideas in Goypeadia look at Patio ideas, P furniture, containers to start off.

I think my advice is the same as Drc726 really. Like most of us you are on a budget so try the pots idea first and then if that is not enough then the tables and chairs will certainly make a difference. In the autumn /winter you could paint the fence. I think the white posts and skirting around the patio make the pink stand out so maybe start and paint that green.

Tracey it is your garden and obviously you must paint the fence the colour you want but, I would strongly advise against painting it red. If this is an area you are going to sit in then having red on two sides of you is unlikely to be restful. Equally putting hanging baskets again a red fence is, potentially, going to create challenges and limit the colour of the flowers you use.

While power washing is very popular at the moment I would think you are bringing up the colour of the flags by doing it. When the experienced gardeners tell you the colour will tone down in time, what they mean is it gets a bit used looking, and that tones the colour down. Every time you power wash it you are removing the aging look. It is a bit like the antique dealers telling you not to polish bronze or you will remove the patina. As moongrower says if you want somewhere soothing to sit and relax then red is not a good colour. It is used in public buildings in reception or restauants areas to make people feel it is time to be moving on. So if you don't want to make your friends feel they want to leave perhaps you could keep the bright colours to a few plants. Welcome to Goy. You have a nice seat down near the house if you placed that on this area you would see how it looks before making drastic changes involving a lot of work. I do like the way you have tiered the garden instead of having a very steep slope to work on. Good luck and hope the ribs feel better soon.

Doddy the fence one the left which is freshly painted looks brown to me but that may just be my eye sight or the picture. Brown is fine for a fence, red to me means pillar box or fire engine. If it is a reddish brown even it will look okay with lots of plants.

The red cedar is a warm gentle colour and will look lovely. Sorry for misunderstanding you. We watch too many garden makeover programmes where they do use outrageous colour schemes at times. Fortunately they also have the money to bring it all back together again. You are doing a good job. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
