Cytisus, Chaenomeles, Escallonia, Potentilla fruticosa, Spiraea japonica and Choisya are all flowering shrubs that should cope with clay soils. If you were to improve the soil by digging in loads of organic matter, compost and horticultural grit then you'll have an easier life in your garden and more choice after the initial hard work.

In my clay I have some of the above plus fuschias, veronicas, Lythrums, Astilbes, Antirrhinums, poppies, campanula, nemesia, verbena, bamboos, hostas zebra grass aquilegias, lavatera. There are loads, good luck.
