Shade and dry

What can I grow beneath a tree in a north facing garden. The soil is dry in summer and wet in winter. I would like a year round interest.

A lot of plants would just hate these conditions, I'm afraid. You could try Vincas - major and/or minor - which are evergreen and do spread. They have mauve, purple or white flowers and you can get variegated forms. Ivies might grow there, too. Again there are variegated leaved varieties. How wet is it in the winter?
