My bottlebrush little-john was doing fine when planted in November. Since April-May I noticed that the leaves were turning medium-brown and falling off, We live in Southern California inland so we have no "real" winter. The branches are pliable. It is on a slight slope. What do I need to do?

Usual cause for this in Britain is drought or cold, could it be either of those with you?
