i am a novice in the garden. how do you know when onions are ready to be picked?

Onions are getting bigger while the leaves are still green.So,when the leaves
are totally brown and wilted, then it's time for picking.

Presuming your not talking about spring onions.... Allow the green growth to die back, when brown pull the onions and allow to dry before storing.
