We have a large horse chestnut tree that has died this year. I have planted ferns and woodland type plants under it. What tree should I plant in its place?

Depends whether you want such a giant tree again or not - unless you have a very, very large garden, trees that size wouldn't usually be in average sized gardens. You don't say what it died of, but I wouldn't recommend planting the same tree again.
