Mares tail
Asked by Vivianj on 15 Jul, 2008
My next door neighbour's garden is almost covered in mares tail and every year it comes through to mine but this year is particularly bad. I am at my wits end, it is even coming up in our lawn now, does anyone have any ideas please. I try and dig it up from my own garden but have physical problems so don't find it easy and certainly couldn't dig next door's garden.

If you are ok using weedkiller, it is important to crush or batter the stems before applying because it has a protective coating - silica, I think. You need to apply it directly onto the plant.

This spreads via its roots. Digging and pulling up is the best way. Over the last two years mine has reduced loads by doing this. You can use a weed killer, you need one that attacks the plant and goes down to it's roots.
My books are old but a good garden centre should help with this.
