When is it safe to take the netting off my plum and apple trees (I have one espalier of each)? Last year I had no plums at all and fewer apples and I was told it was because the birds ate the flower buds. I've put the netting on now, but when is it safe to take it off?

If its the birds then its when the flower start to come out, plums are the first here, then apples as late as may.....its not birds here though, its late frosts......
just a thought won't the birds get tangled in the netting :0 (
