Could be vine weavil grubs eating the roots, Guest. I have just been repotting primulas ands found plenty of the little devils. You can't just dig them up to see because they have heavy tap roots and lifting will kill them. Try spraying the soil with Provado Vine Weavil Killer. This should be available from the larger garden centers or B&Q in Elgin.
