Unknown plant

Asked on 13 Jul, 2008

Hi, we are newbies here and our first of probably many questions is....can someone identify this plant that has popped up 2 years running in our garden? We could browse through the gardening books and internet but thought this would be much more fun. Thank you, Joe & Kerry

Looks like Evening Primrose. Regarded as a weed, but then again, as is frequently remarked upon in this forum, a weed is just a plant in the wrong place. If you like it, keep it.

This is evening primrose or Oenothera.

Thank you for solving that for me. Now I know it's not a verbascum like I had first thought, I will have to re-educate all my friends and family, who admired it, of it's true identity before they go buying the wrong plant lol. Really surprised that Evening Primrose is so tall......had always imagined it to be a tiny little plant. It is a very attractive looking weed so it can stay....plus it keeps the nettles down!!
Thanks again for the replies.

There are lots of different evening primrose, the one you show is the common one but it can look very good in an old cottage garden and will readily seed itself, I think they are really nice plants,
