I bought this plant from my local Hospice Fete in June when it was just a bulb with a couple of leaves. Nobody knew the name of it, wether it is a house plant or a garden plant at the fete. I have since then taken it to garden centers and asked friends and nobody can tell me it's name. It has now got a stem and flower and is 9inches in height This is proving to be a challenge trying to find anything about the plant as i would like to know how to look after it and what conditions it likes. Please please please can someone help me - see the photo

Hi Debzs, I'm not sure what it is but if you add the photo to your photos page you can add it the right way round and it won't get cut off. We'll fix it soon so the question photos do that too :)
Whatever it is it looks healthy so you're doing something right!

So sorry we have had this plant for years, found an article on it which my mother has filed! Will keep looking as the name is on it. I dont water until it is very dry, it lives in the conservatory and this year we had three of the flowers will keep you posted if I find the article, must say it has been a talking point of several visitors. It seems to multiply from site shoots which you can root into another pot to grow a new plant or just keep potting on when pot bound.

A couple of things I can add on its cultivation - it needs a minimum temperature of 10C and being a South African, will do better in good light. It also prefers to be pot bound so don't repot it too often

I was reading last month's RHS Garden magazine when I found an article on caring for this plant!
"These are excellent, undemanding plants for the windowsill or cold glasshouse, generally flowering better when slightly congested in the pot. Use a John Innes No 2 loam-based compost with added grit. Water regularly when in growth and allow to rest when the leaves die back and the plant becomes dormant, but avoid baking them on a sunny windowsill. Can be propogated fairly easily with fresh seed or by simply separating offsets from the bulbs"
