I have a walnut tree in my garden, i have noticed a gunge coming out of its stumps, what can this be and what can i do?

As much as I hate answering a question with another one, how old is your walnut tree, has it ever borne any nuts, what colour is the 'gunge' and by stumps do you mean the trunk? When I know this I may be able to answer your question. The first thing that springs to mind is honey fungus, but need answers first.
