We have the same problem, what I have done is to break of the dried sticks from various plants and stuck them upright into the soil hopefully stopping them from using that patch, but I only think it moves them onto to next clear bit !!!! Not much help am I ! I have to agree they are a pest.

sonic cat barriers work really well - I've used mine on my veggie patch for 3 years and havent had a problem - you will need to turn it off when your grandchildren come to play as they will hear it but you wont - it used to drive my teenagers up the wall!!

could you borrow or actualy invest in a dog .the other thing you could try is a super soaker as cats hate getting wet and have good memories .aparrantly if you get some lion poo or something along those lines cats dont want to come near but saying that ive never herd someone actualy say that works .

Cats like freshly dug bare soil, I find they stop after a few days.

thats what i thaught grandmage .i think something like that broken slate as a mulch as cats do like to bury there poo.it mite be worth actualy giving the cats a dedicated place to do it . at least you will know wear it is .like reverse phycolagy if you like .
