Wood shavings as compost?
Wood shavings as compost?
Asked on 3 Jul, 2008
With two horses & using wood shavings instead of straw in their stables I have large amounts of soiled (dung and urine)shavings to dispose of. Can it be used as a mulch, straight from the stables? How long should it be left as a 'muck heap' before I could safely use it as a compost? Any other uses?

No - you must let it rot down for at least 6 months before you use it. You could add it in layers to your compost heap. If used as a mulch it will 'burn' your plants and probably kill them, not nourish them!
