My handing baskets and tubs are thriving with winter pansies

Shropshire, United Kingdom Gb

My hanging baskets and tubs are thriving with winter pansies. Any idea how long they will flower? Dont know whether to put them in the garden or leave them all the summer if they will last that long and just buy new baskets and tubs for summer plants.

If you cut them back after flowering, you will have summer pansies. You can either keep them in the container,as I do,as if planted in the garden, the slugs seem to get them.Just move the pot to a shadier place,as hot sun(if we get some) shrivels them. You could also take seeds off them, and sow them later on,after they have ripened, especially if you have a favourite colour, you would like to keep.Save you buying more for next winter.

yes they can keep going as they are in fact a perennial. trim/dead head and feed as normal and you will have them all summer too.

Thanks that's a great help. Bloomer - how do I take seeds off them - afraid not up on things like that. I have been throwing the dead heads away once I cut them off.

just leave the flower heads on a bit longer and the seed head will form where the flower was, you won't be able to miss them,

Thanks for your replies. Do you mean when they die just leave them on the stems and they will seed - then cut them off and keep seeds. Does that mean new pansies will then grow again in the baskets. Also do I just plant the seeds as the flowers turn into seeds? Sorry just not up on these sort of things but could do with saving money - I spend a fortune on can-can pansies.

If you leave them on,you will probably get some seeding themselves, but if you also take some off when the seed heads are looking a bit dry and brown, put a paper bag, over the ripe seed heads, and nip them off, into it..Give the bag a shake, and there will be lots of dark brown tiny seeds, ready to plant, or keep in a dry place till you are ready.to plant.Hope this helps .
