chives are taking over my garden especially the lawn. how do I get rid of them. Weedkillers dont work. I have never planted chives, dont know where they have come from but are really taking over

feed and weed type weedkillers tend to work on what they call broadleafed plants. chives are not broadleafed. The only thing I can suggest is that you dig out small pieces at a time. remember they have a small bulb to remove too.

desperate measure could be to paint roundup on the chives using a brush but if you drop any on the grass it will kill the grass too.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. As I suspected no easy answer. I just dont understand how they are multiplying. It would take me weeks to get them out individually. Better get started.

Verdone weed killer will help, cut the tops off with your mower on a high cut, do not cut the grass.

They have a bulb and as they grow they divide the bulb. then if they have flowered they set seed. Are they chives or wild garlic? same family same tendencies.

Thanks again seaburngirl ad Doctorbob1. I am not sure if they are chives or wild garlic, They do have a little bulb, but taste bitter. Yes I actually tried one. Yuck

Grape hyacinth bulbs are invasive and have vaguely chive looking leaves. They also have a garlic-like smell to the bulbs.

That is so strange Mistlass. Chives took my small border until last autumn, but never transferred to the lawn, as some other plants have done. I had a blitz on them. Left a few in place for kitchen use. Is cutting the grass not able to keep them to an acceptable level? Grape Hyacinths won't do a thing in my garden Bryony. Tried so many times to get them going. There is one group of them where I never planted them! I have also had an invasive onion smell bulb that Bulbaholic said might be very invasive Stinking Willie! All over one end of my wide border....never went on the lawn. Blitzing them too this spring. A photo would help to identify. Try googling our friend Willie it might fit the bill!

Misty could you put a picture up so we can tell you what sort of plant iot is please.
Ive never heard of chives spreading that quick onto a lawn and ive grown chives for years

I haven't had any chives that have spread either, but I do cut the flowers off, when getting past their best,so they don't seed.I have just split my large clump, and haven't seen any growing anywhere else.Maybe as suggested by the above members,it could be something else....

Whatever you have in your lawn, be it chives or garlic and other weeds, those that are monicotes like grass and are growing taller than the grass, can be damaged by your mower on a high cut. By applying Verdone it will enter the cuts going to the bulbs or roots. Also any dicotes will be killed as well. Do not apply in dry weather as we in Surrey are in our second drought. No rain the first two weeks in March and now none in April.
