Preservation?

This question is on Aloe vera
Okay, I got another one, but this one (thankfully) is not an issue of life and death! ;) So I've got this healthy aloe vera plant, and he's growing so big! He's got this one arm that's stretching really far and getting too heavy for him to hold up, so it's started to break off. I've broken off his damaged arms and used the aloe before, but I don't really need it right now. The summer is still young, though, and I'd like to save it in case I (or someone else) gets sunburned. Can I preserve the arm somehow? Maybe in the fridge or something?

I wonder if it would root if you stuck it in a pot of compost? Son of Vera ;-)

I would have thought it would go squishy in the fridge - but it's worth a try if it gets knocked off. What have you to lose by trying?
