Begonia: Will these little tubers reach full size plants this year? Or will they get up to a 'reasonable' size this year, and then if I save and store them and start them off again next spring, will they reach an even bigger size next summer than they will this summer? They were received in the post from Thompson and Morgan. They measure three and a half cm across. (An inspiring photo).

Yes, if you start them off now, Jonathan. Mine did last year! I have started mine off already, but it's not too late.

I too got my corms from Thompson and Morgan and started them off weeks ago Jonathan. They are still sat there with not much happening, despite following the instructions and the kind advice given by other Goy'ers. Hope you have better luck than me!

Mine too are not showing any sign of peeping through, so fingers crossed.

Are they best soaked in water before planting to hydrate?

Well I heard not to do this as they can become waterlogged. They are supposed to sit just on the top of moist compost and to be watered from the bottom when compost is quite dry. Although another opinion is to cover them in compost. I was also advised to keep them in a dark airing cupboard, which I don't have. I have put mine on the windowsill now to see if this will help as I've tried everying else. I think in future I would buy the begonias as plants rather than corms as I have better luck with them. Please let me know how you get on.

Just remembered something else mentioned about starting them off. Apparently they like bottom heat so an electric propagator was advised. I compromised by putting mine on a shelf with an electric heater on low underneath, but like I said earlier, nothing seems to be working.

Definitely don't soak them Jonathan! When you plant them, 'nest' them in trays of damp compost Don't water them from above, as that can rot them. Mine are showing little buds, after being in a cool greenhouse for about 4 weeks. Once they're shooting nicely, I shall pot them up and keep them inside until I harden them off. I didn't try them in my propagator, as what I did worked well last year. It might well have speeded them up.

Thank's Spritz, this has helped me too. I will leave them where they are for now and watch out for the little buds to (hopefully) appear.
