Akebia

Asked on 26 Jun, 2008

My Akebia is in a pot on a west facing wall and has grown to about 7 or 8 feet tall. The lower portion has no leaves and it has never flowered. Can someone tell me if I could cut it right back to encourage growth from the base, and also how can I gat it to flower.

I got one from the rescue bit at the garden centre - it looked ratty & potbound. Didn't grow madly in the first year after planting it in the ground, but very vigorous now - all over - so maybe it needs to be in the ground or in a bigger pot & feed? Mine looks so strong I'm sure I could cut it back just about anywhere, but wouldn't want to misadvise you about cutting back yours! About the flowers, I was looking for these lovely chocolate scented things I'd read about, but couldn't see/smell any. This year I really scrutinised it & saw tiny little flowers - can't say there was any smell of chocolate! I'd missed them completely the previous year, they're so small, like the flowers on a pittosporum in amongst the leaves. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?! Leaves look good though.

Mine is obviously very old - the stem is thick where it was planted against the wall. - and it almost gave up, I found a new shoot clambering through the Berberis last year and a friend knew what it was. This year it has spread all over the Berberis and flowered well, too. No idea why it got a new lease of life, but I like the flowers - can't get my nose in for fear of getting spiked by the Berberis, though! !! They weren't huge, but bigger than Caz described. Very pretty. Can't imagine why Blodyn's one isn't flowering. Does it need a bigger pot or a feed?

Thanks for your comments. I think maybe it needs repotting, Maybe I'll plant it in the ground when my new topsoil arrives.
