I have grow the variety Powis castle , not that hardy if we have really minus temperature for prolonged periods plus its better in a drier spot over winter which helps it survive better , I never cut mine down as this help protect the plant over the winter and in the spring would give it a tidy up , and new growth would break from the bottom stems.
