my 10 year old conifers are discolouring a yellow/ brown and have become very brittle. Any idea's

My conifers suffered like this in scorching temps like 35-40C. I can't imagine this is the problem in Glamorgan. Perhaps it is windburn??? Are they in pots or ground? Conifers die off quickly if they are not watered enough.
