apple fruit

I have a apple tree in a tub there are some very small apples on it, But they are splitting can anyone tell me why?

I think it may be due to fluctuations in watering. Plants that produce fruit appreciate a good and consistent supply of water as their fruits grow.

Over watering could be the cause - but it is more likley to be a spell of cold weather just after bloom and as the young fruit was just developing
