Picture 2 looks more like Pyracantha.

Looks like a Pieris or Azalea and a Pyracantha.

8 Feb, 2010

My first thought was the Azalia family for pic 1 and Pic 2 Pyracantha

Rhododendron for number one (or Azalea, same thing really, but different varieties - depends on the colour and form of the flowers) and definitely Pyracantha for number 2.

Possibly - though the rhododendron genus is a very large group of plants, with many hybrids. I'm not 100% convinced it is a rhododendron, but that's what it most reminds me of - need to see a picture when it's in flower.

HI Bamboo thank u for the response
I will upload flowers as and when the plants start flowerinf. The plants are 5years old when are they due for flowering?

10 Mar, 2010

If the plant is 5 years old and hasn't flowered I don't think it is a rhododendron. Looking at the leaves again I'm also not convinced.

Agree with Moongrower, though I'd add that it looks as if the plant has been pruned or cut back - don't cut it at all for a year to see if it flowers - it may be that you're trimming it back and cutting off growths that would have flowered had you not.

Your right Bamboo it does look as if it has been cut back hard. I noticed the buds of one of our rhodos. is colouring up and starting to open... fingers crossed the frost does not get it!

10 Mar, 2010

Fingers crossed indeed - temperature's still a good 5 degrees down on the last few years.

10 Mar, 2010

Yup we are still getting - 5˚ at night which is not good news.

Helo bamboo-Moon-grower
Thank u for the interest in ID. The plant did not flower for the last 5 years so it was cut back in november 009 to give it a bush form. The plant has survived temperatures upto minus 8 degrees C over the years and looks to be cold hardy. The plant will not be pruned now till its flowering

Snag is Arwadoo it can't flower now as you have cut of the part that might have flowered. You will just have to leave it be for several years to see what it does but I'm beginning to think it is a laurel of some sort.

The plant is proving to be an enigma. However the buds have swoolen and let us hope it will flower some day and we will locate its identity.I did see the flowers of the plant in CA USA 6 years ago but I have forgotten their make thank u Moon grower once again.
