how to encourage plants to grow at the bottom of my clamtis more. the plant resembles an umberella .

Do you have a name for this Clematis? Or a photo? There are three groups of Clematis for pruning purposes: if you don't prune those in groups 2 and 3 at the right time, they will grow too tall and produce their flowers at the top, high up, leaving bare stems at the bottom. So you need to know which group your Clematis is in. Unfortunately, there are some that DO have the habit, even when pruned correctly, of flowering at the top. The only thing you can do with these plants is to plant something else to hide the bare stems. Hope this helps.
