robinia pseudoaccacia damage

could a nail in the trunk of this tree (my husband put up a bird box), have damaged it? There are a number of dead branches and the leaf cover is sparse. I think it is also dropping leaves. The tree is about 8-10 years old. Fine last year.

No, I wouldn't think so. This tree has the habit of having dead branches for some reason. Have you had a lot of cool windy days to make it drop some leaves?

I have the same tree, and the branches are EXTREMELY brittle, they will snap without warning, but I do not think it would do harm with a bird box.
