Tree Seat - I think a tree seat would be a nice feature to add to my garden. Maybe oak or some other good quality hardwood. Has anyone seen any quality ones on their travels or can you recommend a stockist. Many thanks,

I don't, but I had to say how easily one forgets just how much vibrancy and colour there is in summer - mine eyes have become very used to monochrome landscapes lately - white snow, black slush, black branches. Lovely photo.

Hello Bamboo - this photo was taken on 3rd May last year - the Acer platanoides was not fully out. Only about 3.5 months away :-)

Hi Dawn we bought one some years ago from Staunton Harold but when we got it home to put around an old apple tree the branches were too low for the back of the seat!-- doh... so we had put it in another place and buy a tree to go inside still we got an acer' flamingo' so that was ok :-)

try E bay ,there are a few hard wood 180%,or all round the tree seats on there at the moment at a reasonable price, (for percent read degreas)

Thanks Cliffo - its the 360 degrees one I would like. I'll have a look on Ebay.
Hi Pam - Staunton Harold is only about 6 miles from me, thanks for that. I'll take a look on their website or pop along (greatgardensonline.com). I would imagine the Acer looks great with the seat.

dun in a rush yes they are the 360degrees, and they are hard wood,

Thanks Cliffo :-)

Dawn, you don't have enough time to sit down. LOL. Why don't you and John make your own seat, not a big challenge. Sweet Chestnut would be the best wood for a true rustic design.

15 Jan, 2010

He hee hee Bob - spot on - I dont think there would be much sitting down going on.
I did ask John this afternoon if he knew who much it would cost to make one - he just kind of grunted, ha ha. I could look online for some designs. By sweet chestnut, would this be available at a timber merchants?

15 Jan, 2010

John does have a point regarding costs. A few years ago I needed to replace the wooden slats on a bench with cast iron ends so I went out and priced up the cost of the timber. I then went back out and bought a completely new bench that looked exactly the same as the original because it was much cheaper than just buying slats! Crazy.

Hello Bulbaholic - that's the trouble isnt it, the price of timber is extortionate.

No idea where to get one Dawnsaunt, but it would certainly be a beautiful addition to this garden. The tree looks perfect for it!

15 Jan, 2010

Thanks Karen, I do too, no time to sit down but would look nice.

15 Jan, 2010

Oh, you could to make time to sit down and enjoy your beautiful garden! it could be a new year's resolution for all us gardeners ...this year I will make more time to sit and look at my garden.....we might actually be able to keep a resolution like that!

15 Jan, 2010

I think we could keep that resolution Karen, if we get a good summer. After the last 2, we certainly deserve a good one. Oh, to sit in the sun would be perfect, trouble is I tend to spot jobs that need doing if I sit.

15 Jan, 2010

I know, I know, it's just too tempting isn't it! lol It's a bit of self discipline that's required...shame.....!!

Dawn have you thought of a blacksmith making you a unique metal one?

15 Jan, 2010

you could stain a tannalised pine builders 4" x 2" .the key is even if you use hard would is to try and sit the legs on a small bit of heavy block or cement futtings just up from the soil as wood realy suffers the worst when its next to damp soil all the time . i bet your acer looks stunning in full bloom . im with bamboo your garden realy does remind me why i just love summer time . it looks realy vibrant .i hope your well take care bye for now xx.

Metal very easy maintainance, but a bit cold on the old rear end! Mind you, splinters in the bum not great either!

I have just spent half an hour going through tree seats, rangeing up to over two thousand pounds, and this is the one you must look at, it is at primrose and is a beuty called the stamford cast aluminium tree seat, £149.95 , you realy must look at this one,

15 Jan, 2010

cliffo i just looked at the chair you said about ie stanford etc . very nice and not run of the mill excuse the pun lol

15 Jan, 2010

an old gardener once told me that the most important thing in the garden is a seat because from there you contemplate your garden and take time to really see what is right or wrong and what needs doing before you start or just look and enjoy what you've achieved (or just have a rest! :-)
hope you find what you want Dawn it looks a lovely spot for it

must have been mixed up last night the seat is at greenfingers.com click garden furniture, click on tree seats, no rot no paint and class.

16 Jan, 2010

Great advice from an old gardener Pam thats what I always say when asked if resting .. no contemplating the overall effect and planning my next move usually to another seat ..

Just a point to bear in mind Dawn with ready made seats , trees of course mature and as trunks expand enough room has to be left to allow them to do this . Often why they are built in situ to ensure this taken into consideration.

Your garden and your choice of course personally think the classic white wooden tree seat looks right if interested search under constructing a tree seat some free plans available.

Know how busy John is given the price would it be worth asking a local joiner for a quote as an option ?

16 Jan, 2010

as an old gardner myself, let me put you right ,that is just somthing the old gardner dreamed as a crafty excuse to sit down,

You've all been so helpful, thanks.
DRC: the blacksmith is a good idea, a local one made my weather vane a few years ago but he's moved now, I'll have to investigate.
Nosey: Thanks for your advice and kind comments, hope you're OK too.
Cliffo: You are so kind spending so much time doing research :-), I'll look at the one greenfingers have.
Pam: Love the old gardeners idea, perfect.
Ray: Your right, John is always busy with other stuff, he could do it but would take him sooooo long.
Lots of ideas, thanks so much, I'll let you know how I get on.

Cliffo: That Stamford cast aluminium one at greenfingers.com has been reduced in the sale - £119.99 with free delivery. I've checked the size though and its a bit small for me but I think that's really good value.
