These plants were in my porch. As it is a double glazed porch and these were fleeced I didn't expect this to happen. :o(

Is there anything I can do, will they recover....put out new growth? The worst thing is...the Dracaena was my Son's, he had neglected it and asked me if I would have it...

Oh no - the poor plants! They do look poorly.

All you can do is nurse them along, maybe cut back to live growth??

They look very sad and sorry for themselves. Don't take them into a room that is more than a than a few degrees warmer than where they were. Rapid heating can cause damage to the cell structure of the plant. Alas I think the dracaena will not pull through.

Even though the porch is double glazed unless you have heat in it, which is unlikely, the temperature will drop dramatically with the weather we have been having recently.

How frustrating for you...

Is that 2nd one an Aeonium? Why not ask Sandra (Wales) as I know she grows these on her Nursery? She might be able to advise you???

Thanks MG, you're right, it's not heated.....I just didn't think.....Poor dracaena....

Spritz...that's a good idea, I'll contact Sandra....Thank you!

Oh no - you really are suffering up there, aren't you. I fear for my fleeced plants - I really don't think they'll survive this. :-(((((((

Well given that we are waiting for our porch to be replaced, it 'should' have happened if October (grr), I was not surprised when all the plants died. We had talked about moving them but the question was where to. Then it was too late... fortunately we had moved the trough of cyclamen into the front hall way and that is doing fine.

Once the porch has been rebuilt then we can look at plants and possibly the need for some form of heating in winter. Mr MB likes to keep the bulbs that must be dry and frost free in there - right now they are on the workbench on the upstairs landing. In fact the outdoor plants climb into the house every winter and seem to spread round when I am not looking...

ohh dear..i have a few looking like this....all i can say at this point is dont give up.....last year i tried different things when a large number of aeoniums looked like this.....the best method seemed to be do nothing......the ones i left alone seemed to bend over at the top...loose all there leaves....but in doing so it seemed to seal the top of the stork....and many regrow from down the stem in the spring. if the stem is soft its to far gone...but if it is firm there is hope....and u could always improve its chances by covering with newspaper at night and standing it on a piece of polystirene ....fingers crossed this cold weather wont last much longer....

Thanks Sandra....I did wonder if they would re-grow from the bottom of the stalk as it did when I cut the extra long growth off last year. I have been giving extra protection to it, and it is raised off the floor so I will check the stalk.....yes, they are still firm Sandra, so there is hope!

Thank you very much for the advice. May-be I'll just keep protecting the Dracaena too and see what happens....do they re-generate themselves too? Not usually I think, but nature can do some strange things....

i was pleasently surprised last year when the regrowth started in the spring...
we will just have to wait and see...

I've seen a dracaena recover from this state....so don't give up yet.

Thanks Cestina, I will be happy if it does.

Good Luck, you would be surprised at how far you can let some plants go before they start the fight for survival !!!

TLG.....the Aeonium is sprouting new growth just as Sandra predicted, but the Dracaena....well, it is still looking poorly. The stalk is still firm, apart from the very top, but I think they grow their foliage from the growing tip, so I fear all is lost on that one. :-( Lesson learnt!

i'm so pleases PG....its amazing that they sometimes recover...;-)

Sandra ~ there are lots of babies coming on 3 of the stalks, if they all keep growing, well.....Also, 2 of the stalks with babies are hanging over the pot and the babies are not near the base, but nearer the tip. Should I cut the stalks off and put them in soil to make a more compact plant?

18 Mar, 2010

yes but not yet...give them time to establish first...maybe wait till may when they are in full growth.

Thank you, I'll do that.
