If its very windy then low level plants are the way to go, what is wrong with the conifers? Do you want something to grow along the side of the house? Or just grow upright?

what about some protection for them with say grasses or small bamboos, to break the wind flow. I suspect they are showing signs of wind burn. have the leaf edges turned brown? They can be lightly trimmed off to improve the appearance.
