the Stem of my Canariensis is about 1m high and has all these woody rotting leafends ca15cm long. Should a take these off and how?

I'm trying to imagine what you might mean, but without much success. Do you mean the stems of leaves which have now died off sticking out lower down the stem? If so, you can cut those off. What you've said, though, is "woody rotting LEAFENDS" and I don't know what that means, really.
