How can I make a cut down conifer tree stump into a feature? Approx. 24" round and 4ft high.Is it possible to cut holes into the stump and plant up? If so, what should I plant into the holes? Also is it too late to dig up a hosta and ferns and divide them? Any suggestions would be appreciated .I have got a lot of ideas from Grenvilles site but would like to hear more.

I don't know about cutting holes in it, I'll leave that to members who have done it! Why not think about either growing climbers to drape gracefully over it, like not-too-vigorous Clematis plants and Ivies, or, alternatively, place a large and heavy pot (or even pots in a group) on the stump and grow training plants in the pot/s to trail downwards? I think it's the wrong time of year to divide Hostas, they are in full swing here. Not too sure about ferns, but I suspect the answer may be the same.

Hi Sadie, Why dont you cut the stump down to ground level, get rid of it altogether, we did this with 4 Leylandii last year..

you could try splitting the hostas, next doors dog dug mine up and! and killed all the new growth, but the leaves grew again!!! it was about this time last year, so take a chance id say...i dont know about the ferns, ive just started growing them this year but i wouldnt chance it...Dee..

If I had a stump of a decent size I would try carving it? Also as Spritz mentioned climbers, Morning glory's are quick.
I moved a fern a couple of weeks ago, no problem just keep watering till it settles in.
Hosta? if you could try to dig a big enough root ball with it otherwise leaves will flop as it's now they are trying to send up flower spikes.

Be aware of the roots of the tree how much soil, how deep etc. Ive got conifers and the roots can be a real pane.
Good luck.

I have a couple of pots standing on five feet tall pillars. They have a small dark-leaved phormium in the middle and golden creeping jenny trailing from the sides. The only attention this needs is cutting back the trailing plants in spring

you could try turning the top into a bird feeding station, i had a 5 foot stump , only about 8 inches dia, nailed a 1foot square piece of wood to it with 4 uprights and a pitched roof and one covered bird feeder was born!!!
just an idea..........steve

An alpine theme might be nice, if you can cut some holes in the stump, line with a little bit of plastic for moisture retention and pop in a few alpines. Once established it will look like it was meant to be.

I've had a think and come up with some more silly jokes for you...

What do you call two young married spiders??....... Newly webs!!

What do you call a grumpy and short gardener?....Snapdragon!

One to cause offence.... Grow your own dope... Plant a man!

I have a slighly rude one for you...

A woman had a garden which was growing beautifully, however the tomatoes would not ripen. Frustrated and running out of ideas for green tomatoes she asked the advice of her neighbour. He replied: "It may sound absurd but after it goes dark go into the garden and take off your clothes... Tomatoes can see in the dark and will blush. In the morning they will be red!" Well worth a try she waits til dark and does as he recommends. The next day the neighbour asks "Did it work?" "Hmmm so so!" she answers "the tomatoes are stil green but the cucumbers are four inches longer!"

Hope these bought a smile to ur face!! :)
