Hiya and welcome to GOY. I was always taught if it flowers before June don't prune. so when did yours flower?

Short answer is no, you don't cut back after flowering (unless it's a montana and needs to be reduced in size) - you need to work out which clematis it is before you cut anything at all.

I'd just add that if yours flower late (late June onwards) then they need pruning back to about 8 inches from the ground in late January, early February. Most of the others shouldn't really be pruned, though this is a generalisation.
