Someone had this question answered fairly recently, and apparently it is quite normal and a sign that it is working. We have them too.

Jeyes fluid will do the trick without any damage to the compost.

I just ignore them.

I too have small flies in my bins and it not helped by the fact that I'm putting more kitchen waste in than garden lately. I'm not bothered by the flies as they are organic...I just shut the lid.

They won't do any harm to the compost although if you find them upsetting you could use fly paper in there! but I imagine you will need a running order with a supplier!

How do I say thanks?
