outgrown pine tree

Asked on 29 May, 2008

We are planning to buy a property that has a beautiful - huge pine tree in the corner of the garden. What is the life span of a pine tree and what is the risk of breaking during strong winds? What about the effects on other plants, on the house?

The answers your looking for depend greatly on what type of pine tree it is. Some pines can live for 300 years or more. The average life span is about 125 years. While I'm not familiar with pine trees throughout the country, the ones here in East Texas can snap during high winds. It usually takes something along the lines of a tornado to snap the pines we have here though. The problem we have here with pine trees in our yards is getting anything to grow under them. It takes a lot of work to keep the pine needles raked up. Hope this helps.

Can you post a photo of it, Lulu, so that we can ID it?
