anyone got skimmia reevesiana?

West Midlands, United Kingdom Gb

I have seen the most splendiferous shrub, skimmia reevesiana it looks perfect, deep green glossy leaves and the reddest massive bunch of berries. It was rather expensive and I didn't buy it. Now I'm suffering, I think Im in love, want it now. Is it too good to be true or should I follow my hearts desire? It's so Christmassy too. There I've said it:-)

I believe its one of the few skimmias that will produce berries without a male pollinator nearby. I.e it has male and female flowers.

I put it on my Christmas list last year and got 2 on Christmas Day. They are very slow growing but both are doing fine and as you say, very attractive..

Thanks Weatherwise, Inverglen, are the berries as showy and plentiful as when you first had them ? I often find that some plants don't perform as well for me as they do for a commercial grower. As for size, slow growing is great, are yours in the ground or a container? I thought of using a container:-)

This particular variety (reevesiana) I've found to be not such a good, bushy grower as the other varieties - I found it rather disappointing. I have planted several of them over the years in various gardens, never that impressed with their performance. That, though, does not seem to be what the others who've answered above are saying. Weatherwise is correct, it is one that produces berries without another Skimmia present.

Hi Drc, I think I've put the comment on the wrong thing.... oh well Yours is lovely , but not the same as the one I fell for at the garden centre so I must have guessed at the wrong name, I didn't look for the name when I saw the plant and so tried to find something resembling it by googling skimmias. If I can get a lift to the garden centre (kind son-in-law) and they still have them, I'll upload a pic and the right name! :-)

let us know how you get on?

In that case, Bornagain, you might need to get two - most Skimmias are either male or female and you'll need one of each to get both berries and flowers.

Thanks Bamboo, wonder which skimmia it was, the ratio of deep red berry to dark green leaf was amazing, nothing like my lovely old skimmia which died in its pot of water logging:-( Ha wouldn't it be funny if it wasn't a skimmia, the leaves were quite long and narrow compared to my old skimmia:-)

How do I say thanks?
