Somethings digging up my lawn!

Shallow holes about 8-10cm in diameter about 2-3cm deep are appearing on my lawn mostly where moss is growing. Looks like little feet have kicked up the grass. Could it be a squirrel as I have seen one on top of my shed nearby. If so how do I stop it?

It may be a squirrel or a hedgehog. The squirrel should have buried a nut but would probably have left a bit of loose soil or a hedgehog looking for worms perhaps.
I don't know how you could stop them though.

Maybe you should get rid of the moss - it might be something a creature wants for lining its winter nest. Our garage roofs have moss all over them, and at this time of year, some creature dislodges it all and drops it all along the ground in front of the garages, so I'm willing to bet something's using it for something. Therefore, if its the moss causing the problem, get rid of the moss, aerate the lawn, scratch up and reseed the bare areas next spring, or now if you remove the moss by hand.

Depending on where you live could it be Badgers? It may be worth while flashing a light on now and again during the night.

Something the same happens in our garden every few weeks - I think it's foxes looking for grubs or worms. I have seen them strolling down the front path when I have come out at night.

I'm not sure its not squirrels - it wouldn't be badgers or foxes on our garage roof.

small enough /big enough to be a match for squirrels. thats about the size of the ones in my garden.

Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll go with the squirrel and nest building theory. The holes are too small for foxes or badgers; they actually look like the start of a rabbit hole but just stop after an inch or so. Very weird! I'm definately going to rake out the moss and aerate the lawn etc to discourage the little blighter. Ive looked in the garden centre for sonic devices but they dont have anything specific for squirrels; I think I'll have to use something that's designed for rats as they are from the same family. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks

Had another thought... I found large droppings next to a couple of the holes and assumed they were next doors cat. Anyone know how large hedgehog droppings are? Cos the holes are far too small for badgers or foxes. This gets weirder!

Could be hedgehogs - get rid of the moss, see if the problem goes away.

Thanks Bamboo - it's first on my list for Saturday! That and buying an airgun!! (only joking)

Nooo, not an airgun! You could just wait and let whatever it is dig up all the moss for you, lol

I have a badger visits regularly, and he does make small holes in the lawn (as though someone has been trying to play golf LOL) so I'd still go with that theory.
