Help Saving a Shoot!

Hello,
I need to know if I can save a baby shoot which has sprouted at the foot of my 3meter Cordyline, and if so how is the best way.
Sadly I have to cut down this tree that has been at the bottom of the garden my whole life as it's pushing over a river wall. It was given to my mother by her own mother and we're all sad to see it go so if there was any chance of keeping a shoot and replanting it I'd really love to try it.
I live in the south of England if that is of any importance...
Any suggestions please!

You need a pruning knife, or a very sharp knife - cut the baby off downwards and keep a piece of root at the bottom - if you're getting rid of the parent, then this should be easier to do. Pot up the baby, keep somewhere a little sheltered, water well, and keep an eye on whether it needs watering or not over the winter. When its big enough you can put it in the garden, if you want to.
