Dicksonia Antartica-on one side of the tree not sure but it's like 10" of the trunk is eaten away, the wooden sticks are all dried up and the larger tree has black things growing on it any idea what all the cause of this may be?

At last, someone else who lives in my neck of the woods - Hounslow's just down the road from me. Any chance of a photograph Bally? Not sure what you mean by "wooden sticks" (roots?) and "black things" on the "larger tree".

Hi, i guess it's Bamboo
Pictures are not my forte however, it's good to know that I'm not the only person from TW5...

wooden stick, i know it sounds odd but wen u hv Dicksonia Fern Tree they are the funny wooden sticks growing out from the side of the tree from the top end dont think roots or maybe? the black things i can't remember the name but will go on another website that mayb able to help me in knowing the name but any ideas why part of my tree is frayed away like the size of 10" cut off from it?? hope the description is not so confusing?

No, no idea, its hard to picture what you're saying, though I guess the most likely explanation would be either some kind of rot, or damage, either from something falling on it, or just from cold, perhaps last winter.

There was another question on this plant prior to yours, but it was asked by someone else - I think she just got confused with your name and theirs. I take it you don't have a digital camera, or a camera phone, so you can't upload a picture of the problem? You could try entering Dicksonia into google and having a look at whatever comes up - there'll be plenty of info - even the RHS has some. My books don't mention any diseases to do with this plant - I know that Dicksonia antartica is the hardiest one, but a lot of the others are only half hardy to frost tender. We did have a colder than usual winter last year, so I'm wondering if yours got frosted or even frozen - you're supposed to have it in a sheltered spot and to push the fronds over the top and tie them down for protection in the winter, plus add some straw or something the crown for protection. Is the area that's "missing" the most exposed part? I'm afraid that's the extent of my knowledge on these plants. Its possible the RHS has some kind of helpline or advice they might give, so it might be worth asking them.

Worth a try, not guaranteeing I'll know any more than I've said already, though;-) Certainly more chance if everyone can see what you mean.
